Rabbit snails....the big count...
Ok as I’d said on the other forum my golden rabbit snails have been having lots of babies; we jokingly said we’d have a guess at how many there were. I’m going to maybe move the tank this week (so I’ll actually count the babies).
Hints:
Apparently the adults can lay 1 baby per month (on average) but apparently they can lay 2 or 3 at a time BUT I’ve only ever seen one baby in an egg at a time and I’ve never seen a laying – I don’t know if they are male and female snails or if they are both (for laying).
I have 4 large adults (of breeding size) and 2 adolescents.
I discovered my first tiny baby snail in July 2011 and I’ve physically seen 9 baby snails at once (without looking hard…i.e. all on the front of the glass)…
How many babies are there?
I’m going to guess at 15 (I’d said 13 on the other forum but I’m upping my guess.
Also on rabbit snail news…I had 7 adolescent sized yellow rabbit snails…over the last month 6 have slimed off to snail heaven. I’ve no idea why, I don’t know if it’s possible for them to “catch” something. Over the last say 4 months I’ve added baby apple snails (snail food has increased to cope with this) and 4 new female bettas (to my 1 remaining female betta). I’m unsure whether to move the remaining yellow rabbit snail in with the golden ones (just in case) or just to leave him where he is. There has been no attacking the snails, no aggression towards the snails…just your normal sorta tank activities.

I will guess 18
I know snails can carry parasites and some diseases, so they might have caught something off the apple snails.

I will guess at 28 and still wonder if I'm underestimating!
My first tank's inhabitants were a group of ~12 Rabbit Snails from "Des" on *the unmentionable forum* back in spring 2010, of which all the 4 Yellows were DOA, along with the odd single Yellow Antennae and Chocolate Orange Spotted. A few months later we bought two Golden forms locally.
Over the last 18 months I've lost count of the youngsters born (no Yellow Antennae forms though), as I gave "mussels" a handful when he collected some fish from me, but also I lost a fair few when in the 620T (I can only guess they were out competed by the Pond Snail plague I had at one point).
I now have the remaining ~19 advertised for sale on AC at less than £1 a snail, to hopefully find them a good home with someone who has a very peaceful tropical community tank, where they can feed without being pestered or even nipped. They are now with my Pyjama Synos; Hoplo Cats; Humphead Glassfish; Golden Wonder Killis; ABF; Hypoptopoma in the Rio240, so far so good, but I'd still rather move them on.

Re: Rabbit snails....the big count...
Ok I did the big count on Sunday....
I'd guessed 15, Star = 18, 22 = Myfishforsale and 28 = N0body Of The Goat....
The results are in....*drum roll please*...there were 12 babies!
That was it lol. I'd seen 11 at once as well. I did expect more but 12 there was!
