Attack of the shrimp!
I've just fed the betta tank and have witnessed something I've never seen before and I'm a little concerned. I have two amano shrimp in with them, and they're pretty big now. I see them feed on algae, plants and left over food, but when I put flake food in earlier they went nuts. One bolted straight to the surface and was trying to latch on to any betta that came near it. This went on for about a minute until it found a whole flake, after which it settled down and tried to stuff the whole flake into its mouth.
Over the next couple of months I was going to get a group of 5 Kuhli loach and a couple more shrimp, but after seeing them do this I'm worried that they might be a threat to the fish? Unless of course it was just so hungry and was trying to find any platform it could to get hold of some food. Anyone heard of them latching on to fish and doing any damage?

Re: Attack of the shrimp!
They're such cool little creatures, but I've got to admit that they do freak me out sometimes. Catching them is horrible because they just crawl out of the nets
Time to do some research to make sure they wont damage the fish.

Let us know if you find anything out. We're very interested in shrimp and it would be useful information for us.
Re: Attack of the shrimp!
Apparently it's rare, but it does happen, but usually only to sickly or dying fish. All my betta are healthy, and it was just going from fish to fish. I don't know if the smell of the food set it off into a feeding frenzy and it was just trying to get to the food or what o.O
I'm gonna get some shrimp food either way. I'm a bit concerned now as I've promised Bryn shrimp in a bid to get him interested in the tanks. But I don't want to add more of the little buggers if they're going to start attacking fish o.O
I'll do some more research in the morning.

Re: Attack of the shrimp!
Ok, an update Apparently lots of people have seen shrimp do this, and most of the time it's them just using the fish as a platform in order to get to the flaked food on the surface.
How ever, amano shrimp are easily mislabelled as some Microbrachium Shrimp species, which can be vicious little buggers. The best way to be sure is to make sure that they don't have long or large pincers at the front of the body. My amanos have tiny ones that they use to pick up food.
So you guys should be fine with shrimp
