The Nitrogen Cycle
The nitrogen cycle is the name given to the reaction of filtration in your aquarium. Waste produced by fish which produces amonia is turned into "healthy" water by the filter. Within the filter is "healthy" bacteria which feeds on amonia and nitrites, turning it into less harmful nitrates, which in turn are removed by water changes. The diagram below explains it simply.
The nitrogen cycle is the basic concept of what happens within the water in the aquarium, however other reactions also happen over time with regards to pH (water hardness) levels.
